Center of excellence
Forest 4.0 is a modern Center of Excellence focused on advancing smart forestry and sustainable forest management. It serves as a hub for innovation, research, and digital transformation in the forestry sector, with the goal of integrating advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and data analytics into forest monitoring and decision-making.
The center was established through the collaboration of academic institutions such as Vytautas Magnus University (VDU), Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Linnaeus University (Sweden), and several industry partners. Forest 4.0 operates as a non-profit public institution and aims to connect science, business, and technology for the benefit of environmental sustainability and the bioeconomy.
Its main activities include developing digital tools for forest monitoring, supporting innovation through research and development (R&D), facilitating education and training, and creating an ecosystem where institutions and businesses can collaborate on future-ready forestry solutions.
In addition to technical innovation, Forest 4.0 promotes knowledge sharing and capacity building—particularly through internal platforms such as the “Center of Excellence” learning and resource portal, designed to support professional development and inter-organizational collaboration.

The overall objective of the FOREST 4.0 project is to establish a Centre of Excellence to transform the forest environment monitoring, data acquisition, and analysis, and capture value from the collected data
